"Change for Change" Event Raises Over $17,000 for JDRF
HOLBROOK, NY - February 19, 2009 - With community involvement and support, Future Tech Enterprise, Inc. has raised over $17,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation through its "Change for Change" fundraising event.
In January, Future Tech CEO Bob Venero challenged readers of the Bayport-Blue Point Gazette to prove him right: that small change can make a big difference for the charities that are suffering in this economy. He offered to match the first $5,000 donated to the company's Change for Change effort, which features a coffee table collection bin in the company's lobby. As soon as the newspaper was delivered to the Smith home in Bayport, Steven Smith jumped at the opportunity to donate to a cause close to his heart. This time, Change for Change was raising money for diabetes research and support programs, and it's Jennifer Smith, 8, who has juvenile diabetes.
"When your child needs help, you do whatever you can to make sure they get it," said Mr. Smith, who owns a chain of super-sized Laundromats called Laundry Kingdom. "To our family, this was something we knew would help our daughter and others like her. This community has been very kind to us and we are happy to pay it forward."
As owner of the Laundry Kingdom chain, Mr. Smith has access to lots of loose change; and in honor of Jennifer, he is donating 20,000 quarters to Change for Change! In the spirit of the moment, Mr. Venero also offered to donate 20,000 quarters.
On February 13, residents, business owners and students from Bayport-Blue Point High School came to Future Tech and dropped their coins into the collection bin. At the end of the day there was more than $17,000 collected. "We're in an economy where our charities are suffering," said Mr. Venero. "We're showing that even small change can make a big difference in people's lives. We are challenging local businesses, residents, students and school groups to continue to collect their spare change and donate it to their favorite causes. They'll see how much it means to the people they are helping."
