HOLBROOK, NY - November 13, 2008 - Diabetes: a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas to convert sugar, starches, and other foods into energy. Diabetes affects men, women, and children of all races and ethnic groups and is the leading cause of adult blindness, kidney failure, amputation, heart disease, and stroke.
There are approximately 20 million people in the United States affected by diabetes, 208,000 of which live on Long Island, yet over 5 million are unaware they have this disease.
Through the company’s Change for Change initiative, Future Tech Enterprise is doing its part to promote diabetes awareness on Long Island. All donations made to the coffee table charity box that sits in the company’s lobby in November will be donated to a local diabetes center to help the cause.
Each month, Future Tech Enterprise collects donations in the form of spare change that visitors and employees can drop into the collection bin. Though it might seem like a simple concept, the initiative shows how people’s small change can make a big difference in the community.
